For around a year now, occasional news stories have been foretelling the death of Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS). This started in July 2012 when Microsoft announced it was ending development of SBS and there would be no SBS 2012 in the server product line up.
There was some backlash from channel partners. SBS has been one of Microsoft’s most popular products over the last 10 years and some claimed that Microsoft had lost touch with the market and its partner base.
In response to the backlash, Microsoft said that the gap in the portfolio was covered adequately by deploying Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Exchange Server or Office 365 as a cloud-based solution.
Faced with this choice, the answer is clear. It would be difficult to recommend that a small business put Exchange Server in-house. Often, without an IT professional on staff, the cloud option of Office 365 makes clear business sense.
With significantly reduced cost and management overheads, Office 365 enables business efficiency and provides faster ROI, as well as greater reliability than on-premise solutions that provide the same capability.
Do you want to stick in the mud by hanging on to SBS or the updated Windows Server 2012 Essentials/Exchange Server combination? Or would you rather embrace the future of productivity with Office 365?
It’s your call. And we’re waiting for it!
