Clock running down if you rely on Windows XP and Office 2003

Well respected but time to go

Microsoft Windows XP is well respected by many IT managers out there. After a period that was characterised by much customer dissatisfaction, with the release of XP, Microsoft finally achieved the level of reliability, resilience and functionality that was expected for desktop business computing. It is a testament to the quality of XP that it continues to be so widely deployed today.
However, Microsoft is officially ending support on the 8th April 2014. That means no more patches or updates which prevent hackers and malware exploiting vulnerabilities in XP and Office 2003. This alone makes migration to a more modern OS and applications a necessity. Other factors include not being able to run the latest versions of applications, which can significantly reduce productivity.

Act now the message from Microsoft is clear

The barebones of this is that Microsoft’s policy is to provide 10 years total support. This is made up of 5 years Mainstream Support and followed by 5 years Extended Support. Analysis of Microsoft historical deployment data suggests it takes an average of 18 – 32 months to perform a migration.
With less than 9 months remaining until the deadline, it suggests that for some there is a need to accelerate the migration process to at least twice the normal speed. For others this may need to rise to around 3.5 times. Whatever the statistics and averages say, it is clear there is no time to lose.
If your business depends on XP at the desktop then you need to act now. There will be no online or paid support from Microsoft once support has ended. The message from Microsoft is clear: “Small to mid-size organisations should locate a Microsoft Certified Partner to understand the best options to meet their business needs.”
